Food Lady Update

The Food Lady concept is a way of bridging the gap between the Food Program Coordinator and the home or center children. It is a vehicle for the children to participate and learn about food choices, hygiene, manners, physical activity and listening skills. Thanks to a grant from the California Department of Education I have a collection of tools at my disposal. There are colorful food print aprons, straw hats with artificial fruits all around the crown and a vegetable necklace. There’s even a pair of white canvas shoes with fruits stenciled on them. A chef’s hat and fruit earrings will be added soon. There are books, flash cards, activity kits and teaching tools.

The response from the providers has been enthusiastic. So far I have visited Stacie DeArman and Sarah Johnson’s homes. I am also visiting Hansell Center. For this “pilot” phase of the project I chose groups of a certain size and age range. The ultimate goal has been to have the providers become the Food Lady! We read stories, do activities, integrate teachings about hygiene and healthy foods and prepare a snack with the help of the children.

Children love to help cook. Something as simple as holding the can while you open it can make them feel part of the process. They are more likely to eat food they have helped prepare. Cooking is also a great time for educating about different foods – color, texture, where they come from, taste, etc. There are many books that feature food and food issues. Reading and discussing can enhance the child’s experience. Physical exercise can be beneficial and it can be as simple as having children move in different ways to music.

I will be going to Howonquet Head Start for several visits in the Fall. I will also re-evaluate the data I have collected and see if the pilot phase needs to be extended. All of this will culminate with a report to the CDE at the beginning of the New Year. Their goal is to assemble a kit of replicable projects to be distributed to providers and educators throughout the state.

Locally I will continue an abbreviated form of the Food Lady activities when I do my regular home visits. I will also do the Food Program training on September 29 from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Family Resource Center to pass on the Food Lady principles.

Thanks to the providers and staff for making me feel so welcome. It has been a joy to interact with the children and add to their nutritional knowledge and fun. I look forward to sharing it with you.
