Comings and Goings
Dear Parents, Providers and Centers,

This letter is to inform you that as of September 2nd, 2005, I will no longer be working for the Del Norte Child Care Council. I have decided to move back to Sacramento to start my own family. We are expecting our first child in November. I am going to miss everyone with whom I have had the opportunity to meet and work.

Sincerely,
Kasey Velez

Dear Parents, Providers, and Centers,

My name is Debbie Williams and I’m Kasey’s replacement! I’ve been in Crescent City for about 2 years now-transplanted from Medford/Yreka area. My husband and I have two children and seven grandchildren whom you’ll probably hear about a time or two. We love this area because of the beauty and diversity. I am so excited about being part of the DNCCC team and look forward to meeting you all!

Sincerely,
Debbie Williams

Congratulations 2005 CARES recipients!
Compensation and Retention Incentives is designed to promote, encourage, and reward Early Family Child Care providers for their efforts in their chosen field. To be eligible, providers must work in a licensed facility, continue their education through college courses with ECE units or offered training hours, and work a minimum amount of weekly hours. Providers are rewarded with a cash stipend according to their level of continued education, with additional awards given to participants who are educated in the area of special needs, infant and toddler care, and second language.

It is proven that there is a link between the quality of children’s experiences in child care and the compensation, stability and training of their child care providers. With more parents relying on child care, especially during the early years, it is critical that all influences children receive outside of the family are positive and nurturing.

Research shows that a child’s brain develops most dramatically in the first five years and what parents and caregivers do during these years to support their child’s growth will have a meaningful impact throughout life. Based on this research, California voters passed Proposition 10 in 1998, adding a 50 cents-per-pack tax on cigarettes to support programs for expectant parents and children ages 0 to 5. In the past 4 years, First 5 Del Norte distributed over $250,000 in Prop. 10 revenues to the CARES Program.

First 5 Del Norte Commissioners: Dave Finigan, Michael Miller, Hilda Contreras, Gary Blatnick

And special thank you to CARES advisor Phil Freneau and First 5 Executive Director- Patti Vernelson

Quilt Project
Many of you may remember the beautiful quilt donated to DNCCC by Shari Ortega last year. We are currently planning another quilt with the help of the wonderful members of the Lighthouse Quilt Guild. We have a preliminary design for the quilt and hope to have it ready to hang at venues in town by August or September. Special thanks go to Carmen Brooks for beginning a dialogue with the Guild to gain their assistance. Many thanks to this group of wonderful women who are willing to find time in their busy lives to help us with this fundraiser. Stay tuned as the project unfolds for updates and information on where you can see the quilt and purchase raffle tickets to support our agency programs.
