Bad News for Subsidized Parents

In an effort to balance the state budget and resolve California’s financial crisis, the Governor has proposed to eliminate the Stage 3 CalWORKs child care program effective April 1, 2003. The Legislature began deliberations in January regarding whether or not to adopt the Governor’s proposal to eliminate the CalWORKs Stage 3 program. Although at the present time this is only a proposal, as of April 1, 2003, Del Norte Child Care Council’s CalWORKs Alternative Payment Program may no longer be able to reimburse providers for the services to Stage 3 families.

We are informing you now of this possible change to assist you in making plans.

The codes 1-00 and 1-12 in the upper right corner of the voucher signify Stage 3.

  1. If parents are not currently on the waiting list for their local Alternative Payment program, they can obtain information about being placed on the waiting list for Alternative Payment programs by calling 464-8311. If they are selected from the Alternative Payment waiting list, their provider may be eligible for reimbursement through this program. Or print out an application form here at our website.
  2. If the children are between the ages of 2.9 and 5.11 years of age, they may be eligible for subsidized care at Hansell Child Development Center. Call 464-4174 for more information.
Being placed on the waiting list for subsidized childcare is not a guarantee that parents will receive childcare services. In general, families are selected from the waiting list in order of income, lowest income first. In addition, the availability of childcare services always depends on the availability of funding. We are aware that childcare is critical for all families.

We will continue to provide childcare and development services as long as we are able. Please call with any questions you may have. If you have questions, please call Maggie Nunneley @ 464-8311 x19
