| Naughty or just curious? Sometimes what needs to be changed is the environment, not the child. For example, young children need to explore and touch; that's natural and healthy and shouldn't be discouraged. So instead of falling to a pattern of yanking kids away from your valued possessions, try moving those items out of reach. This may sound like merely avoiding the problem, but what you're really avoiding is the risk of giving harmful mixed signals. Scolding or hand-smacking the toddler for touching the VCR or remote might make him/her keep their hands off the equipment from that point on, but it could also make them afraid of investigating any other items they are curious about, and they may miss out in exploring and learning. |
