CHP to Boost Focus on Safety Belt Violations
California Highway Patrol officers will focus on motorists and passengers who are not wearing seat belts during a special enforcement scheduled for Feb. 16, officials said.

The day was designated as Vehicle Occupant Safety Day, according to the CHP. Some officers will be on grant-funded overtime and on the road looking specifically for violations of seat belt and child safety restraint laws.

More than 90 percent of Californians wear seat belts, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. But the CHP wants to raise that number, CHP Commissioner Mike Brown said in a statement.

Members of the public can report children who are not properly buckled up by calling (800) TELL-CHP. A letter will be mailed to the owner of the vehicle with educational information about occupant restraint laws.
