WIC News
A Healthy Smile is Something to CHEER!

  • Cheers! For healthy teeth and a winning smile-you look good and feel good.
  • Cheers! For knowing that dental caries are contagious—babies are not born with bacteria, but can be infected early in life. Kudos for not sharing cups, pacifiers, utensils and toothbrushes with your children.
  • Cheers! For breastfeeding your baby. She/He will have less of a chance of developing dental caries.
  • Cheers! For seeing a dentist early in your pregnancy and taking your baby to the dentist by their first birthday.
  • Cheers! For brushing your child’s teeth and gums as soon as the first tooth appears and brushing twice a day, especially before going to bed.
  • Cheers! To the dentists, doctors and other health care workers who take care of children’s teeth.

Annual Child Care Provider Retreat
Mark Your Calendars

Co-sponsored by the Del NorteChild Care Council and the Del Norte Local Child Care Planning Council
Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Mary Peacock School from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We are very excited to bring two very special people to Del Norte County. Kenneth Wesson, Educational Consultant will delivers the keynote addressing on the neuroscience of learning for educational organizations and institutions throughout the United States and overseas. His audiences range from pre-school and early childhood specialists to college and university-level administrators and faculty members. His recent international audiences have included educators and chief administrative officers from South Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Northern Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa.
Wesson’s most recent articles on the brain include: "Early Brain Development and Learning," "What Recent Brain Research Tell Us About Learning," and "Memory and the Brain." These articles appeared in the Independent School Journal, which was recently honored by the Association of Education Publishers (AEP) as the 2005 "Periodical of the Year."
We are also very excited to present Nancy Chavez, from Valley Oak Children’s Services in Chico, CA. She will present a "Preschool for Adult" type workshop which will offer curriculum and craft ideas for all involved in childcare. You will be able to choose either of the above speakers for an afternoon session, as we will be doing breakout sessions after lunch.
Julie Violante will be catering our lunch. Please mark your calendars for a very exciting day.

If you have questions, please call Charlene Blackburn, Program Director at 464-8311, ext. 20. We will be sending out registration information very soon.

160 Indoor Games & Projects!
Available in the DNCCC Lending Library
You can find them in the Incredible Outdoor Games Book by Bob Gregson. Most of them are geared for school age and early adolescent children. There are activities with little or no preparation and some to be planned ahead. Theater Games, Sound & Movement Games, Mind Games and Action Games are only a few of the categories in this fun-filled book. Steal the Bacon is a traditional game using only a beanbag or ball of yarn and some masking tape. Smaug’s Treasure is the mythical version of this game. Make Intergalactic Paper Bag Masks, play Balloon Soccer, have fun with Real Life Drama or have a Kangaroo Relay. Ideas abound! This book is a must see for those of us living in a rainy area. The activities also lend themselves to outdoor play. You can join our library for $5.00 a year. What a bargain. Come in to see our collection of books. While you’re here check out the art supply shop, curriculum boxes and toy room.

Important Changes for Child Support
Federal Law now requires one place for handling child support payments. To meet these requirements payments will be handled by a new office called the California State Disbursement Unit (SDU). Child Support Services will still be provided by your local child support office. The SDU will be responsible for collecting and sending child support payments.

For more information for both people who pay and people who receive child support please see our Spring 2006 Newsletter , contact your local child support agency or visit www.childsup.ca.gov

Take Our Evaluation & Planning Survey
Please come by the office for an evaluation form to assist us with planning for our future in the community. We want to be as helpful as possible to all who need assistance. This survey will help us to know in what areas we might improve our services.

Thanks!
