Bicycle Safety
Bicyclists and motorists enjoy the same right and bear the same responsibilities. By watching out for each other and following the rules of the road, bicycling can be a safe, enjoyable form of recreation and/or commuting.

    Motorists:
  • Watch for bike lanes when driving.
  • Allow bicycles plenty of space – do not crowd them.
  • Never turn into a bike lane ahead of a bicyclist.
  • Allow the bicycle to proceed before you turn.
  • Remember riders have different skill levels.
  • Never assume a bicyclist will be able to react like a driver.
    Bicyclists:
  • ALWAYS wear a properly fitting bicycle helmet that meets safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Be seen! Be safe! Wear bright colors and put reflectors on your bike. Avoid wearing headphones. Be able to hear and react if needed.
  • Avoid loose pants, backpack straps or shoelaces that may get caught in the bike chain.
  • Know the road rules and follow all traffic laws. Never ride against traffic. Always ride in the same direction. Use bike lanes or designated bike routes whenever possible.
  • Don’t ride too close to parked cars. Watch for opening doors or sudden car movement.
  • Learn hand signals to communicate with motorists and other bicyclists.
