New Food Pyramid - Part I

The USDA recently released the My Pyramid Food Guidance System for 2005. They created an elaborate website which you can access at www.mypyramid.com. The website includes a wealth of information and an interactive section to help you find your own individualized healthy eating plan. This plan is based on your age, sex and activity level.

Recommended changes include increased intake of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients, lowered fat intake, increased intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and calorie intake balanced with energy needs.

Physical activity is divided into 3 types:
  • Sedentary is less than 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity in addition to daily activities.
  • Moderately Active is defined as getting at least 30 minutes and up to 60 minutes a day of moderate physical activity in addition to daily activities. This is equivalent to walking 1.5 to 3 miles per day at 3-4 miles per hour.
  • Active means 60 or more minutes a day of moderate physical activity in addition to daily activity. This is equivalent to walking more than 3 miles per day at 3-4 miles per hour.

There is a wealth of information on the site regarding whole grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and milk products, meat and poultry, fats, sugars, salt and alcohol. Food safety is also addressed. Watch future issues of our newsletter for the latest recommendations in these categories.
