Most kids don’t mind wearing a helmet (especially if Dad and Mom do), but it needs to fit and be positioned correctly to be effective in a spill.
Here are some tips:
- Wear it flat and low. Your child’s helmet should rest low on the
forehead—the width of one or two fingers from the eyebrow.
- Open wide! When she opens her mouth wide, the helmet should pull
down. If not, tighten the chin strap. You should be able to fit just one
finger between the strap and her chin.
- Shake your head "no." If the helmet slides when she shakes her head from side to side, adjust the straps around the ears. The straps should form a Y, with the straps adjuster right under the ears. Straps should be flat—not loose or twisted.
