10 Ways to Keep Your Cool
with Your Children
  • Learn to use relaxation techniques to decrease anger. Try meditation exercise or taking deep breaths.
  • Take time to cool off before you discipline your children.
  • Do your best not to take your children’s misbehavior personally.
  • Keep in mind that we all slip up occasionally, including our children.
  • Decide what behaviors you must take a firm stand on and what you can be more flexible about.
  • Look at the "big picture". If things are going pretty well, don’t turn minor misbehavior into a big issue.
  • Focus on your children’s positive qualities and constructive behaviors.
  • Remember that you serve as a model for your children. Think of how you want them to handle their own anger, and act accordingly.
  • Make sure you get enough time away from your children to do things you enjoy.
  • If you feel you need help, consider parenting classes or professional counseling.

How to Minimize or Avoid
Discipline Problems Away from Home
  1. Set rules before you go.
  2. Take your kids shopping early in the day when they are well rested and there are fewer crowds.
  3. Tell your children exactly what they can get/buy before you go.
  4. Have an organized shopping list with you.
  5. When eating out, reduce the number of trips to fast-food places so your children can learn good restaurant manners and healthy choices.
  6. Praise all good behavior.
  7. If a tantrum occurs, do time out immediately! Find a quiet place to sit with your child.
