| Better Learning? |
| A few months ago in her column Joyce Houston of Project Lean in Humboldt County addressed the issue of the impact of nutrition on learning. She characterized nutrition as a necessary first step in preparing a child to learn. Studies show clearly that students who eat breakfast get better math and reading test scores, pay more attention during school and are absent less frequently. Nutrition works in tandem with physical activity. Exercise brings more oxygen to the brain helping students to concentrate better, be more alert and improve their mood and behavior. We are all aware that childhood obesity is climbing at an unprecedented rate. The antidote is to be more aware of what we are eating and what we are feeding our children. We can all do our part on an individual level. All of these points that Ms. Houston makes are just more support for following CACFP Food Program/Food Pyramid guidelines. Providers are in a unique position to make a difference and the Food Program is another tool to make that happen.
