When is a Child Ready for Self-Care?
There are no "right answers" to indicate when a child is ready for self-care. These questions are meant as an aid to you in making a decision about your child's readiness.
How your child responds to self care will depend on:
  • Age of the child.
  • Maturity level of the child.
  • Attitude about being left alone.
  • Communication between parent and child.
  • Does my child carry out responsibilities according to my directions?
  • Does my child use good judgment?
  • Does my child tell me about problems he/she has at school and home?
  • Can my child easily reach me by phone?
  • Are there other adults nearby who can help my child?
  • Does my child feel comfortable staying home alone?
  • Does my child express fears about being home alone?
  • Does my child know personal safety and first-aid skills?
  • Is our neighborhood generally considered safe?
Once you have decided that your child may be ready to try self-care, there are a number of important subjects to think about and discuss.
  • Make sure that your home is safe for children (especially think of poisons, firearms, medications, matches, cigarettes & alcohol).
  • Determine procedures for the use of keys, locks, doors and telephones.
  • Establish a plan of action in case of an emergency.
  • Prepare children for safety at home and in the neighborhood.
  • Establish guidelines for constructive activities for children to do when they are home alone.
