| Food Lady Update |
| The Food Lady Best Practices grant is still in the pilot stage until the end of February 2005. During this time visits will be restricted to the pilot sites: Hansell Center, Howonquet Head Start and a small number of day care homes. Once final reports are submitted to the State by the end of February 2005, I will make arrangements on a provider-by-provider basis to integrate elements of the Food Lady program into regular Food Program monitoring visits. This might mean the Food Lady could read a story, expand upon the story with a further nutrition-related lesson, do some food identification exercises, assist the children with preparing their own snack or meal and offer some hand washing and tooth brushing reinforcement. The children have been very attentive to this new person showing up dressed in colorful clothing and ready to interact with them in some new ways. It is a great opportunity for the Food Program to include some interaction and teaching for children as part of a friendly visit. The providers have also appreciated the little breather it gives them and a new slant for future activities. Thanks to the providers who have participated so far and helped me polish up the program. I look forward to being able to bring it to the larger provider group in 2005. Rosalie |
